Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough As Pride Fall to Bridgewater 58-53

Greensboro, NC - Greensboro Men's Basketball (3-5, 0-0) hosted Bridgewater College (9-2, 3-1) on Wednesday night, and fell 58-53 despite a great defensive effort. Javion Majette led the Pride with 10 points on the game.

The Eagles came into the game scoring over 77 points per game, and Greensboro was up to the task of slowing their offense down. The Pride led for the vast majority of the first half, and their defense was a big reason why. The Eagles shot just 25% from three point land in the first half and turned the ball over 11 times. After Greensboro took a 9-7 lead after a Grant Thompson jump shot, the Pride led the rest of the first half.

Greensboro's defense was stifling in half number one, holding the Eagles' top scorer Alec Topper scoreless throughout the half. The Pride shot the ball well from long range, going 4-9 in the first half. Greensboro dominated the offensive glass, getting 16 offensive boards on the game. The Pride had a 27-20 lead late in the first half after a monster put back dunk by Matthew Brown, but the Eagles followed up with an Aaron Oates and-one to bring the score to 27-23 at the end of the half.

The Pride began to turn the ball over in the second half, giving Bridgewater momentum. The Eagles would take the lead with 12:22 left in game and would keep the lead for the rest of the contest. Greensboro wouldn't go away quietly, however, as the teams would trade buckets throughout the rest of the game.

With 3:51 to play, the Pride cut the Bridgewater lead to 53-50 after an Isaiah Pruett layup. Despite getting a couple of stops down the stretch, the Pride couldn't take advantage to either tie or take the lead. With less than a minute to play and Greensboro down 3, Pruett drove in the paint and had his shot blocked by the Eagles' Jordan Cooper, although the shot appeared to be blocked after it hit the backboard. Unfortunately for Greensboro, they didn't get the goaltending call, and Bridgewater got the ball after a jump ball was called a few seconds later.

With 7 seconds left the Ealges hit two free throws to put the game out of reach and handed the Pride their 5th loss of the season. Aaron Oates led Bridgewater with 23 points, while Alec Topper finished with 14. For Greensboro, Isaiah Pruett finished with 9 points and Tim Boulware finished with 8.

The Pride had 18 turnovers on the night and went 10-18 from the free throw line. The game had a total of 5 lead changes.

This Friday, Greensboro hosts Maryville College inside Hanes Gymnasium for a 4:00 PM tip-off. Tune into the game live on greensborocollegesports.com
