Greensboro, NC – Greensboro College's Men's Basketball team (3-4, 0-0) competed tonight against cross-town rivals Guilford College (9-0, 2-0) inside the Greensboro Coliseum. The battle of the GC's is always a meaningful game and tonight's matchup was no different. This year's edition of the Pride vs Quakers featured an undefeated Guilford team ranked #3 in the country and a hot Greensboro team having won three straight games.
The game would start off with both teams exchanging buckets. Through the minutes of the first half, the Pride led 8-6 after a Javion Majette three-point shot. However after the hot start, Greensboro would go over 5 minutes without a point while the Quakers were able to take momentum away and take the lead. With over 11 minutes left, the Pride found themselves down 3 (13-10) with a chance to swing the momentum back in their favor.
In the final 10 minutes, Guilford showed why they have been so dominate to start the year. After leading 19-16, the Quakers held Greensboro to just 7 points the rest of the half. During this same defensive stand, they put up 17 points of their own. The Pride would trail 36-23 going into halftime. For Greensboro, Grant Thompson and the Greensboro guards were dominating the Quakers in the paint, having almost double the points in the paint to the Quakers.
To start the second half, the Pride seemed to be doing everything right. They earned quality shots and held the Quakers offense at bay. The Pride however could not get enough shots to fall as the second half went on. Greensboro was able to pull within a dozen (43-31) with 13 minutes remaining following a good defensive stand which led to a Tim Boulware jump shot. Following more good play from the Pride, the Quaker lead was cut to 10 (45-35) with 10 minutes to play.
Despite the momentum building for Greensboro, the final 10 minutes would not go their way. The Pride would be held to 10 points the rest of the way, while Guilford would find their groove again offensively. Despite 15 points on 70% shooting and 7 rebounds from Javion Majette, Greensboro would fall to the Quakers 60-45 in what was an exciting contest.
While both teams came in with winning streaks, it was the Pride who saw there's snapped in the Coliseum. The big difference in this one for Greensboro was allowing the Quaker shooters to get hot from long-range. Guilford shot 37% from the three point line, hitting 12 in total. These three pointers accounted for over half of the team's points.
The Pride will be back in action Wednesday, December 13th at home in Hanes Gym. Greensboro will face off against Bridgewater College with tip off scheduled for 7:30pm. Fans can go to greensborocollegesports.com to watch and follow the action live.
