Barrino Records First Double-Double in Loss to Methodist

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Women's Basketball team (0-7, 0-1) took on Methodist University (4-2, 3-1) in their home opener for the 2023-2024 season on Tuesday night. The Monarchs came out on top by a final score of 79-45 to win their 3rd USA South Conference game of the young season.

The game started well for the Pride as they traded the lead back and forth with Methodist. Reigning USA South Rookie of the Week Kensie Harris started the game with a two point jump shot to get the scoring started for Greensboro. Later, Tonya Williams hit a jumper to tie the game 4-4 midway through the first quarter. The teams traded baskets throughout the period, and the Pride would take a 12-10 lead into the second quarter. 

The Methodist offense got hot in the second period and outscored Greensboro 24-8. The Monarchs were led by Rebecca McGaughnea as she scored 6 points in the quarter and 12 points for the game. The Pride struggled to get going offensively, shooting 4-17 in the period. 

Methodist continued to pull away in quarter number three, outscoring Greensboro 24-10. For the Monarchs, Aniyah Tate scored a game high 19 points on 9-12 shooting. Kensie Harris would hit two free throws near the end of the quarter to bring the score to 55-30. Harris finished the game with 5 points and 3 rebounds.

Greensboro's offense improved in the fourth period as they scored 15 points. Tamera Hooker hit her only three pointer of the night in the quarter and Azuria Barrino finished off a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the contest. As a team the Pride shot 15-63 from the floor and had 53 total rebounds to Methodist's 48. 

This Saturday the team is back inside Hanes Gymnasium for a non-conference game against Bob Jones University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM.
