Newport News, VA - The Greensboro Women's Basketball team (0-6) traveled to the third ranked team in NCAA Division III Christopher Newport University (7-0) on Sunday. The Captains of Christopher Newport came out on top 79-43 thanks in large part to a strong first quarter that put the Pride in a large deficit early.
Christopher Newport controlled the first period by outscoring Greensboro 30-4. The Captains got out to a 10-0 lead before
Samiah Mitchell got the Pride on the scoreboard with a jump shot. The lead was then extended to 18-2 after a three pointer by the Captains' Mia Wilson.
Kensie Harris scored her first bucket of the game to stop the run with 4:30 to play in the quarter. Greensboro would be shut out the rest of the period and would find themselves in a hole early.
The Pride fought back and played well in quarter number two. Harris scored her second basket of the game early in the period, and then
Tamera Hooker hit a three point shot less than a minute later. Hooker and
Keyonna Thompson scored the next 6 points to get the score to 35-15. After two free throws by
Nataya Atwater,
Tonya Williams hit two free throws of her own as Greensboro kept pace with the #3 ranked Captains in the second quarter. At halftime Christopher Newport held a 48-21 advantage.
Kensie Harris scored the first bucket of the second half for the Pride, as she would go on to score 8 points and pull down 10 rebounds on the afternoon.
Keyonna Thompson would help out with a jump shot of her own later on in the period to bring the sore to 58-27.Â
The teams played even with 15 points each in the fourth quarter.
Tamera Hooker hit a three pointer just one minute in, followed by a layup by
Azuria Barrino. Hooker and Barrino carried the offense in the final period as the Pride stayed competitive against one of the top teams in the country. Hooker would finish the game with a team high 10 points and dished out 4 assists.
Keyonna Thompson finished with 8 points, while Barrino had 7 points on the day.
This Tuesday the Pride play in their home opener as they host USA South Conference rival Methodist University. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 PM inside Hanes Gymnasium.
