Roanoke, VA - The consolation game of the Roanoke Classic Tournament featured the Greensboro Women's Basketball team going up against the hosts of the tournament, Roanoke College. The Maroons would come out on top in this one 73-49 thanks to their offense shooting 46% from the floor.
Roanoke got out to a 27-12 lead in the first quarter after the Pride shot just 26% from the field. The Maroons would be led by Rose Sande, who led the team with 15 points on the afternoon. Greensboro kept the game close early in the first period after a
Samya Williams layup brought the Roanoke lead to just 10-9. The Maroons would go on a 7-0 run after this bucket and wouldn't look back the rest of the way.
Roanoke ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 27-12 lead. The second quarter was much of the same as the Pride struggled to get their offense going. Roanoke led 29-14 after a jumper by Lauren Keel, and would later extend their lead to 34-15 after a three-point shot by Kate Littlejohn. By halftime Greensboro found themselves down 44-21.
The Pride offense would improve in the second half as they outscored the Maroons 14-13 in the third quarter.
Nataya Atwater, who scored 12 points for the game, hit a shot from long range midway through the period to help Greensboro try and stay in the game.
The Roanoke offense stayed consistent all game as the Pride couldn't slow them down enough to mount a late comeback. The Maroons outscored the Pride 16-14 in the final quarter to seal their first win of the season.
Tonya Williams led Greensboro in scoring with 14 points while collecting 6 rebounds. The Pride did come up with 13 steals on the game compared to Roanoke's 7.Â
Greensboro will travel to play Guilford College on Tuesday night, with tip-off scheduled for 5:00 PM inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
