Roanoke, VA - Saturday night the Greensboro Women's Basketball team played in their first of two games at the Roanoke Classic Tournament on the campus of Roanoke College. Game one saw the Pride match-up against Piedmont University, and while the game stayed tight through the first three quarters, the Lions pulled away with a big fourth quarter to beat Greensboro 79-54.
The first quarter saw the Pride shoot 38% from the floor and total 19 points. Multiple Greensboro players scored in quarter number one, including
Tamera Hooker who scored 5 points and
Azuria Barrino scoring 4 points. Hooker hit a three-point shot with 10 seconds left in the quarter as Piedmont would take a 24-19 lead into the second period.Â
The Lions extended their lead to nine after Laken Stiles hit a jump shot to make the score 30-21. Nearing the end of the first half Greensboro trimmed the Piedmont lead to 35-30 after a
Keyonna Thompson free throw, and at the half the Pride found themselves only down 40-34.Â
Greensboro outscored Piedmont in the third quarter 15-14 as Thompson continued her strong play on offense. Thompson led the Pride with 17 points on the night. The Pride clawed their way back to within two points with just over a minute to play in the period to make the score 50-48. The Lions got two buckets in the paint late in the quarter to bring the lead back up to 5 points heading into the fourth.
Piedmont took over the game in the final period, outscoring Greensboro 25-5. The Pride could not get their offense going in the final quarter while the Lions caught fire thanks to Laken Stiles, who scored a game high 22 points. Greensboro shot just 2-18 from the field in the last 10 minutes.
Three Greensboro players scored in double figures, including Thompson, Hooker, and Barrino. Hooker scored 15 points on the night while Barrino tallied 10 points.
Samya Williams helped out on the glass by bringing down 6 rebounds.Â
Tomorrow afternoon, the Pride play in the consolation game of the tournament as they go up against Roanoke College. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
