Second Half Surge Keeps Pride's Season Alive

Greensboro, NC – Greensboro College's Women's Soccer team (#4 seed) competed tonight on Pride Field in the quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament against the Pacers of William Peace University (#5 seed). This match had everything a fan would expect from a playoff game. There was a total of 29 shots and over a dozen first class chances. Eight total goals, and a dominate comeback. Earlier in the regular season the Pride and Pacers drew 0-0, in what was a very defensive battle but tonight was the complete opposite.

William Peace would score the first goal of the match in just the third minute of action on a deflection, hammered in by Mia Rumanchik. Following the goal, Greensboro would sustain possession in the attacking third which resulted in two corner kicks in the first 6 minutes. On the second corner kick, Amery Skinner would punch in a header on a wonderful cross from Svea Eckstrand, tying the game at 1-1. Over the next fifteen minutes the two sides would trade chances, but each back line was able to hold strong to keep the game level.

In the 20th minute, William Peace's top goal scorer Emma Avery would receive the ball at the top of box and score a goal on a well-placed long shot. Down 2-1 the Pride would respond well by generating some opportunities in the final 25 minutes of the first half. On the defensive side, Sophia Pagnamenta made two huge saves in the final 15 minutes, keeping the Pride in the match. The Pride would go into halftime trailing by one goal but according to Julia Howland, this was where the team came to life. Howland said after the game "During the break we rallied as team. If we wanted to stay in this tournament we needed to play better".

The Pride, down 2-1, would absolutely dominate the second half. They spent the majority of the 2nd half with possession in the attacking half and nearly tripling their first half shot total. The Pride would strike first in the 63rd minute when the team leader goal leader, Amery Skinner would tap in her second goal of the night following a rebound from Cassidy Olszewski to tie the match at 2-2.

This goal would open the floodgates for the Pride and only in seven minutes they would score again. Julia Howland would receive the ball 40 yards out from goal, escaping pressure from two Pacer defenders and would go upper 90 to score the go-ahead goal. The Pride would go up 3-2 completing the comeback.

Just minutes after Howlands' brilliant goal, the Pride would be back on the attack. After the Pride earned a corner in the 78th minute, Svea Eckstrand would play it short to Kelsey Jarrett at the top of the box who would send the ball in on goal. The ball would ping pong around the box and eventually find the feet of Ella Ramsey, who calmly placed it into the back of net giving the Pride a 4-2 lead with just over ten minutes remaining.

The Pride were not done yet as just 7 minutes later Molly Edwards would find Julia Howland in the box and she would score her second world class goal of the night with a bullet to the top of the net. The Pride scored four unanswered goals in the second half to take a commanding 5-2 despite their 2-1 deficit heading into the half.

William Peace would score to pull within two in the 87th minute but it was too little to late. The Pride would win this match 5-3, sending them to the semi-final round of the USA South Conference Tournament. Svea Eckstrand after the game touched on this team's able to fight through the hard times stating, "This team knows how to switch gears…It is great to see that we can push through being down early".

The Pride will play their next match on the road against Southern Virginia University this Thursday. In what will be a "revenge game" for the Pride they will look to upset the #1 seed and book their spot in the USA South Championship game. Kick-off is slated for 5:00pm.
