Women's Soccer Defeated 4-0 in Conference Semifinals

Buena Vista, VA - The Greensboro Pride Women's Soccer team was defeated tonight in the USA South Conference Semifinals 4-0 by #1 seed Southern Virginia. The Pride finishes the season with a 10-6-4 (5-2-2) record.

Greensboro held the Knights scoreless until the 31st minute when Makinna Winterton scored to make it 1-0 in favor of Southern Virginia. The Knights held that 1-0 lead into the half as the Pride looked to stave off elimination with a second half surge.

Southern Virginia added to their lead in the 54th minute when Maci Rackham scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the Knights. Southern Virginia then added two more goals in the half, one by Matia Murray and another on a header by Claire Stephens in the final minute.

Despite the loss, the Pride finished a strong season by winning five of their final six games, including their USA South Quarterfinals victory over William Peace. The team also had two USA South Conference First Team selections (Abby Romanisko, Amery Skinner), two Second Team selections (Sofia Pagnamenta, Julia Howland) an Honorable Mention (Kelsey Jarrett) and an All-Sportsmanship team selection (Maci Hulver). Svea Eckstrand was then awarded the United Soccer Coaches Division III Player of the Week for 10/23-10/29.

After the loss, coach Mike Johnston said of the season, "It's hard when the season ends to think of the season as a whole, but when you take a step back to think about it we had double digit wins, all conference selections, and a national player of the week. But I'm most proud of how we represented our school with class. We've got a special group of ladies. This group has been resilient all year and the future is bright for our program."

Season Notes: The Pride will graduate three seniors this season, including Svea Eckstrand, Skylar Mathis, and Kyarah Hemmons. This year the team was able to outscore their opponents 43-24, and averaged 2.15 goals per game compared to giving up just 1.2 goals per game. Goalie Sofia Pagnamenta recorded 142 total saves with a save percentage of 85%.
