Greensboro, NC – The opening game of a Saturday doubleheader, and the first home game of 2023, proved to be a nail bitter as the Greensboro College Men's Basketball team hosted William Peace University in a USA South contest. The crowd at Hanes Gymnasium was loud, but in the end the Pride would fall to the Pacers by a final score of 75-72.
Greensboro scored the first six points to begin the first half and, a few possessions later, a jumper by Junior Erik
Alvey (Durham, NC) increased the lead to eight points, 10-2. A Junior
Rujon Walter (Kinston, NC) layup kept the advantage at eight points, but with 8:20 remaining on the half, William Peace was able to pull to within five points, forcing a Pride timeout. The Pacers cut the lead to 27-26, but Senior
Kevon Wright (Greensboro, NC) drained a three-pointer from the wing to stop the run. A few minutes later, an Alvey layup gave Greensboro their largest lead so far of nine points, however, William Peace would go on another run and eventually tie the game as the half ended, 35-35.
The second half started with the Pacers taking their first lead of the game and that would hold for a few possessions until Wright tied things back up with a jumper. A three-pointer from Senior
Ty Hill (Shallotte, NC), followed by a dunk by Junior
Josh McQuinn (Westfield, NC) gave the Pride the lead again, 53-48. The two teams would trade the lead for the remainder of the game, but with 22 seconds left, William Peace pulled ahead for good and as the buzzer sounded, Greensboro fell to the Pacers 75-72.
Hill led the Pride with 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Junior
Isaiah Pruett (Asheville, NC) finished with 11 points, which included two three-pointers. In addition, Junior
Matthew Brown (Orlando, FL) added 9 points, while grabbing 8 rebounds. Greensboro will return to action Tuesday, January 10
th as they travel to Southern Virginia University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
