Greensboro, NC – On Saturday afternoon, the Greensboro College Men's Basketball team was looking to earn their 10
th win of the season to push their overall record to over .500. In order to do that, they would have to face an athletic Methodist University team, who was still searching for their first win of the year. However, with the pep band and students making Hanes Gymnasium loud, the Pride were able to control the game and come away with the win over the Monarchs, 93-81.
Layups by Junior
Matthew Brown (Orlando, FL) and Senior
Ty Hill (Shallotte, NC) gave Greensboro a quick lead, 4-0, as the first half began. Methodist would eventually tie the game, but Brown had an answer and a few possessions later, Junior
Erik Alvey (Durham, NC) and Sophomore
Grant Thompson (Graham, NC) converted back-to-back layups to put the Pride ahead by 12 points, 16-4. For the next few minutes both teams would exchange baskets, but at the 9:45 mark of the half, a dunk by Junior
Tim Boulware (Greensboro, NC) pushed the advantage to 16 points. The lead hovered around that number until Junior
Isaiah Pruett (Asheville, NC) drained a three-pointer to give the Pride a 19-point lead, but as the teams headed into the locker room, the Monarchs were able to cut into the deficit and Greensboro held the lead, 47-34.
The start of the second half saw Methodist pull to within seven points, but Brown and Hill would put the Pride offense back on track with three straight baskets. A few possessions later, Junior
Mason Sergi (Ashburn, VA) took the ball on a fastbreak for the layup and eventually Junior
Rujon Walters (Kinston, NC) would convert a three-point play to take control of the game, 68-51. Walters followed that up on the next possession with a three-pointer and Brown would do the same. With 4:34 remaining in the game, Greensboro enjoyed their largest lead, 24 points, after a three-pointer from Hill. This allowed Coach Cantamessa to put his Freshmen in for quality playing time and as the final horn sounded, the Pride would earn their 10
th win of the season, 93-81.
Brown led Greensboro with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks, while Hill finished with 17 points, going a perfect 3-3 from the three-point line. Boulware also finished in double figures, scoring 12 points. Greensboro will return to action Wednesday, February 1
st when they host Southern Virginia at Hanes Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.Â
