Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong second half shooting helps Greensboro earn conference road win over Mary Baldwin, 76-68

Staunton, VA – The Greensboro College Men's Basketball team began the week with a trip up north to Virginia for a USA South Conference match-up with Mary Baldwin University.  This would be the first of two meetings this season between the teams, and on this night it was the Pride who came away with the win over the Fighting Squirrels, 76-68.

Junior Tim Boulware (Greensboro, NC) took a pass down low from Junior Matthew Brown (Orlando, FL) to start the scoring for Greensboro, as the first half began.  However, Mary Baldwin proceeded to score 11 straight points, until Boulware was able to convert on another basket to stop the run.  A Josh McQuinn (Westfield, NC) dunk trimmed the lead to 10-5 and, for the next few minutes, the Pride traded baskets with the Fighting Squirrels.  However, with 1:57 remaining in the half, Greensboro found themselves trailing by double-digits but as the teams headed to the locker room, the Pride had cut the lead in half, 28-23.

Mary Baldwin started the second half with five straight points, to go back up by 12, but Boulware answered with a three-pointer, which was followed by a Junior Mason Sergi (Ashburn, VA) layup.  A few possessions later, Brown pulled the Pride to within four points, 42-38 and then after a timeout he hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to one.  The game would be tied after a basket by Junior Erik Alvey (Durham, NC) and Sophomore Grant Thompson (Graham, NC) proceeded to give Greensboro only their second lead of the game, 47-45.  The lead continued to change hands, but Senior Ty Hill (Shallotte, NC) converted a layup, with 10:15 left in the game, giving Greensboro the advantage, 56-53.  The lead would increase to seven points and the Pride were able to stay out in front due to a strong defense, which continued to turn into successful offensive opportunities.  The advantage increased to double-digits after another Brown three-pointer and as the final buzzer sounded, Greensboro would earn the road conference win by a final score of 76-68.

Brown led all scorers with 26 points, to go along with his 8 rebounds and 7 assists, while Boulware finished with 15 points and Thompson finished with 13 points.   With the win, the Pride even their overall record at 9-9 and are now 4-3 in the USA South. They will return to action on Saturday, Jan 28th as they host Methodist University at Hanes Gymnasium.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
