Fayetteville, NC – Saturday began a stretch of two straight games for the Greensboro College Men's Basketball team. First up was a stop in Fayetteville, NC as they faced Methodist University in a USA South Conference match-up. The Pride would control most of the game and eventually fight off a Monarchs comeback to earn the win, 76-67.
Greensboro jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, after a Junior
Isaiah Pruett (Asheville, NC) three-pointer, to begin the first half, and then Sophomore
Grant Thompson (Graham, NC) answered a Methodist basket to keep the lead at six points. Pruett would connect again, on the offensive side, and at the first media timeout the Pride held the advantage 10-2. Out of the timeout, Junior
Josh McQuinn (Westfield, NC) scored two straight baskets, but the Monarchs answered with 3 straight of their own. Juniors
Erik Alvey (Durham, NC) and
Matthew Brown (Orlando, FL) increased the lead to double-digits and that was followed by two Junior
Rujon Walters' (Kinston, NC) layups, giving the Pride their largest lead of the game, so far, 28-13. Junior
Tim Boulware (Greensboro, NC) continued the Greensboro scoring with a jumper, but eventually Methodist would score the next five points to cut the score to 30-18. A block by Brown set up a fast break opportunity for the Pride and Pruett was able to find Alvey for the slam dunk, to increase the advantage to 18 points, with 4:20 remaining in the half. The lead would hold and as the half came to an end, Greensboro took a 20-point lead into the locker room, 45-25.
The second half saw the Pride maintain their lead, after a Thompson jumper, but the Monarchs continued to try to chip away at it. At the first media timeout, the score was 49-33, but a Senior
Kevon Wright (Greensboro, NC) layup pushed it back to 18 points, and a few possessions later, McQuin put Greensboro up by 23 points, 55-32. However, Methodist started to creep back into the game and were able to pull to within 13 points and eventually cut the lead to 59-49. Both teams would trade a number of baskets, but the Pride converted their free-throws to hold off any momentum the Monarchs tried to gain. However, with just over a minute to play, the Monarchs climbed back pulling to within nine points but, Greensboro would find success again at the free throw line to earn the road conference win over Methodist, 76-67.
Brown led the Pride with 16 points and 5 rebounds, while Boulware added 15 points and 5 rebounds. In addition, Pruett finished the game in double figures with 11 points. Greensboro will stay on the road as they head east to Rocky Mount, NC on Sunday to face North Carolina Wesleyan University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
