Rocky Mount, NC – Friday afternoon began a two day stretch of weekend games for the Greensboro College Women's Basketball team. First up was North Carolina Wesleyan, who had only one conference loss, and was looking to knock the Pride from the ranks of the conference unbeaten. However, Greensboro would place four players in double figures, to earn the road conference win over the Battling Bishops, 89-82
Both teams traded baskets to start the first quarter, but a layup by Sophomore
Lauren Livingston (Greenwood, SC) gave the Pride the early lead, 4-2. However, NC Wesleyan would score the next four points to jump out in front, until Junior
Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC) and Livingston regained the advantage for Greensboro. A three-pointer from Senior
Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) would extend the lead to seven points. The Battling Bishops were able to pull to within three points, but Livingston would drain another Pride three-pointer to increase the lead back to 18-12. Eventually the lead increased to double-digits, 27-16, and as the quarter came to an end, Greensboro held the advantage, 29-16.
The second quarter began with Legette hitting a jump shot, but NC Wesleyan answered with two straight of their own. On the next possession, Moore got the Pride back in the scoring column, however with 6:52 remaining in half, the Battling Bishops pulled to with 10 points. Sophomore
Azuria Barrino (Charlotte, NC) answered with a layup, but NC Wesleyan slowly chipped away at the Greensboro advantage and as the team's headed to the locker room, the Pride led, 41-34.
Both teams traded baskets to begin the third quarter. Free throws by Sophomore
Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) gave Greensboro the eight-point lead, but the Battling Bishops answered with another basket of their own. Senior
Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) and Livingston were able to push the Pride lead back to double-digits and after a Legette free-throw, Sophomore
Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) drained a short jumper. However, at the 3:49 mark of the quarter, NC Wesleyan, once again, was able to chip into the lead and cut it to six points. A three-point point play from Moore, followed by a Jennings layup, pushed the advantage back to double-digits but as the quarter ended Greensboro only led, 66-61.
The Pride opened the fourth quarter to, once again, take a double-digit advantage, however, NC Wesleyan was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities and pull back to within six points, 79-73. A Whiteside three-pointer slowed the Battling Bishops down and a steal and layup by Legette gave Greensboro much needed momentum. After a missed NC Wesleyan three-pointer, Palmore grabbed the defensive rebound and found a streaking Jennings for the fast break layup, with only 1:25 left in the game, and that would be enough to earn the hard-fought win by a final score of 89-82.
Legette finished the game with a team high 23 points, while Livingston added 18 points and 8 assists for the Pride. In addition, Jennings contributed with 16 points and Whiteside with 12 points. Palmore, once again, led Greensboro on the boards, grabbing 8 total rebounds. The weekend road trip will concluded on Sunday as the Pride travel to Raleigh, NC to face William Peace University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
