Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pride use strong second half to defeat Brevard, 73-61

Greensboro, NC – On Tuesday night, in Hanes Gymnasium, it was a battle of the top two teams in the USA South standings.  The Greensboro College Women's Basketball team and Brevard College both came into the game undefeated, with identical 6-0 records, and it was an opportunity for one team to get an edge early on in conference play.  On this night, though,  it was a strong second half that would propel the Pride to the win over the Tornados, 73-61.

Sophomore Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) began the first quarter with a long three-pointer for the first score of the game, but Brevard proceeded to score the next seven points in a row, to take the early lead, 7-3.  The lead would be short lived, as Jennings followed two Senior Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) free throws with another three-pointer.  Jennings continued to score, along with baskets from Junior Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC) and Sophomore Lauren Livingston (Greenwood, SC) to close out the quarter with the two-point advantage, 17-15.

The second quarter saw Legette score five straight points, but with 3:34 remaining in the half, the Tornados would pull even at 22-22.  They eventually jumped out in front by four points, but Legette and Livingston put Greensboro back ahead by one point,  However, as the teams headed to the locker room, the Pride would find themselves trailing by a score 33-32.

Brevard controlled much of the third quarter, taking their largest lead of the game 43-36, but once again, Legette and Livingston sparked the Pride to pull to within two points.  Jennings came alive again to score seven straight points and suddenly Greensboro had taken control of the game again.  As the quarter came to and end, Legette would score again to give the Pride a six-point lead, 51-45.

Jennings and Legette kept the scoring going in the fourth quarter and then Senior Karlie Mason (Monroe, NC), Senior Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) and Sophomore Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) helped keep the Tornados from making a comeback.  Palmore's effort on the boards limited any opportunities Brevard would have on offense and with 1:17 left in the game, Greensboro was ahead by double-digits.  As the buzzer sounded, the Pride would earn their 12th win of the season and remain undefeated in the conference, beating the Tornados, 73-61.

Legette led all scores with 24 points, while Livingston finished with 20 points, followed by Jennings with 18 points.  In addition, Palmore continued her dominance on the boards grabbing a total of 18 rebounds.  Greensboro will return to action Friday afternoon as they travel to Rocky Mount, NC to face North Carolina Wesleyan.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
