Men's Soccer Pulls Off Upset at Home

Greensboro, N.C - Greensboro College Head Soccer Coach Manbi Nypeon wants his Pride to score more goals. All coaches want their team to score more goals. But the one thing Coach Nyepon does not worry about is the defense and goaltending he gets each and every time out from his Pride's back line.

On Wednesday night, the Pride had the perfect opportunity to make a statement. One that if you looked at the records coming into play you may consider the Pride a long shot. Carolina University, located in Winston-Salem, N.C. and playing in the NCCAA where 6th ranked nationally, were traveling to Pride Field with a spotless 7-0 record.

The one common opponent both teams have shared, Greensboro would tie Guilford 0-0 and the Bruins would shellac the Quakers by a count of 6-1. The point being, the Pride would need to dig deep to leave their home turf with their second win of the season.

The first half featured high octane action and the Pride found several odd man rushes against the Bruins defense very early. And it only took 3 minutes and 11 seconds into the contest before the speedy pair of Brady Mower and Craig Thomas would slice and dice the Bruin defenders for a picturesque goal. Mower's assist and Thomas' 3rd goal of the season would break a Pride scoreless streak that was approaching 250 minutes. Timely work by goalie Cristian Del Cid Portillo kept the Bruins off the scoreboard as the home team would take that early goal and the lead to the locker room.

The second half of the contest featured the Bruins, boasting a roster littered with quality players from around the globe, coming out with an aggressive attitude. The Bruins would spend a great deal of time on the Pride side of the field but were kept at bay by the defense and the smooth goaltending of Del Cid Portillo. The Pride would be outshot in the second half 14 to 4 but seemed to be in position to thwart any serious Bruin threats. As the scoreboard struck zeros, the Pride would again step forward defensively and make the Thomas goal at the 3:11 mark of the first stand up all evening while securing a 1-0 victory.

Greensboro College Men's Soccer Head Coach Manbi Nyepon had these observations on the big win: "Our guys just continue to fight. I have been saying the last few weeks this team is connecting at the right time. We have a lot of new faces, and it takes time to grow as a unit. Every member of the coaching staff and players are so excited about conference play. This win today against a well- coached and talented opponent raises our confidence to a new level."

The Greensboro College Men's Soccer team will begin conference play on Wednesday, October 5th, as they travel to Buena Vista, VA to tangle with Southern Virginia University at 4:00PM.
