Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Men's Soccer team, enjoying their first win of the season this past weekend, would welcome a strong Roanoke College team to Pride Field on Wednesday night.
The Pride would expect a major tussle as the Maroons have a reputation of bringing excellent athletes and a veteran coaching staff to town. Head Coach
Manbi Nyepon's squad would have tough task, but also an opportunity to build off their victory last time out.
An exciting first half was highlighted by spirited and athletic play by both teams. Pride goalie
Cristian Del Cid Portillo had a busy first half and was able to keep the Maroons off the board in impressive style. Those saves would allow the Pride to go into halftime up a goal due to a nice collaboration between
Jordan Shutt and
Collin Thomas. Thomas' header found the back of the net for the 1-0 intermission lead for the home team.
During the second half, the Maroons intensity would increase and the pressure as well. It would take less than five minutes for the visitor to ring the bell as Harrison Kraus would even the score at one. Tensions would begin to rise as crunch time was upon both teams. Yellow cards would fly, and a Maroons player was excused from play due to a red card. Even though Greensboro had their opportunities late, the deciding goal would take place at the 67:18 mark. A wild scramble out in front of the net littered with fallen bodies would result in a Maroons goal to break the deadlock. Girom Affolter would send the visitors in front and the 2-1 score would stand through the game's end.
Pride Head Coach
Manbi Nyepon had these thoughts on the tough loss: "I felt we played our best game against one of the top teams we will play all season. This one is disappointing for sure. But I saw organization, discipline, and the ability to fight for this victory. We are also getting healthier, and a lot of new faces are giving us solid play.
Collin Thomas has really stepped up with his speed and works so well with
Jordan Shutt which we saw here again tonight. And our new guys like Arturo, Evan, Jovan, Nate, and Juan are now working their way into the system nicely. Watch us down the road as we are getting better and took another step tonight."
Greensboro College Men's Soccer will return to the field versus arch-rival Guilford College for a road game on Saturday, September 17th at Armfield Athletic Center.
