MISENHEIMER, NC. -- The Greensboro College men's lacrosse battled the Pfeiffer Falcons for the top spot in the USA South standings on Saturday afternoon. Greensboro came away with the 11-9 loss, as Pfeiffer gained control in a closely contested game in the second half. Aaron Larios-Neubert netted three goals for the Pride, and Austin Abourjilie and Michael Meley eached found the back of the net twice, but it was not enough to defeat the Falcons on their home field.
Goalie Chris Stallings kept the Pride in the game all day, making 12 saves against 23 shots on goal.
Larios-Neubert got the Pride on the board at 07:47 of the 1st quarter to tie things up, and a back-and forth battle would ensue throughout the 1st half. Pfeiffer would get the next two goals before Michael Meley scored back-to-back goals to knot things up again at 3-3. Austin Abourjilie then got into the act scoring two more, putting the Pride ahead 5-3. Aaron Larios-Neubert would get another one past the Falcon goalie to put GC ahead 6-3, and give each player two goals for the day to that point. Greensboro would hold onto a 6-5 lead going into halftime, but it did not last.
Tyler Ajemian scored at 9:40 of the 3rd period to put Pfeiffer ahead 8-7, and they would not relinquish the lead. Treven King's goal at 9:30 in the 4th put the Falcons up 11-7, and that would be more than enough as they stifled the Pride's attempt at a comeback. Dom Scali and Will Beyer each scored in the final minutes to bring the score back to 11-9, but GC could not muster enough to finish the comeback.
Now sitting at 8-4, Greensboro returns home Friday to host Piedmont for a conference game scheduled for 1P.M. at Pride Field.
