STAUNTON, VA. -- The Greensboro College baseball team started a three game series at Mary Baldwin with a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon. Game one saw an offensive explosion in the 5th inning, as the Pride scored 10 runs on nine hits to take a commanding 13-4 lead. Luke Pegram started the inning with a double, followed by Adam Weber getting a base hit. With runners at 2nd and 3rd and no-one out, Alex Morales' RBI-single brought in Pegram to tie the ballgame at 4-4. Braxton Rupp's RBI-double put the Pride in front 5-4, then Cam Edmonds reached on a Squirrel fielding error, bringing in another run. Drake Carrick hit another RBI-single to make it 7-4 GC, then Cam Watts hit a sacrifice fly to force a pitching change.
Greensboro showed no mercy to the next pitcher either, as Luke Pegram hit a 2-RBI single to bring in Aaron Smith and Drake Carrick. Alex Morales got his second RBI of the inning on a base hit to bring around Pegram to put Greensboro ahead 11-4. Adam Weber scored the final run of the inning as Braxton Rupp reached on a fielder's choice, but the damage was done. Greensboro led 12-4 after five innings, and would go on to win 14-6.
Jacob Baldini went 5.0 solid innings in the start, allowing four runs and striking out three Squirrels to get the win. Alex Morales had himself a day from the plate, going 4-5 with four RBI, as well as Luke Pegram going 2-5 with two RBI and a walk. Adam Weber also contributed four of the Pride's 18 hits.
In game two, the 8th inning was the pivotal moment, and this time it was the Squirrels who came up big. Mary Baldwin started the inning with back-to-back doubles to take a 4-3 lead, then another RBI-base hit from Jared Mayhew stretched the lead to 5-3. Mary Baldwin would tack on an insurance run, then close out the 9th to take a game from the Pride.
Greensboro had another efficient game from the plate, getting 12 hits for the game, but they could not push potential runs home, leaving nine runners on base. Luke Pegram went 2-5, and Devin Summers provided a spark with his 3-4 day from the batter's box.
Looking to win another conference series, Greensboro will clash with the Squirrels tomorrow at 1pm.
