Maryville, TN - After a successful weekend, the Greensboro College Men's Basketball team hit the road to Tennessee for an out of conference match-up with Maryville College. The Pride were looking to build on the momentum they created after three straight wins, but it would be a tough physical game and one that they would drop by a score of 101-73.
The first half began with Senior Kevon Wright (Greensboro, NC) quickly draining a jumper to give Greensboro the early 2-0 lead. The game was tied at 7-7, but Junior Mason Sergi (Ashburn, VA) hit a three-pointer to push Greensboro back out in front. However, The Scots would step up the pressure and at the 14:32 mark, they held the advantage, 16-12. Their lead would grow to six points, until Junior Rujon Walters (Kinston, NC) drove to the basket for a successful layup. Midway through the half, the Pride found themselves trailing by nine points, 25-16 and eventually would fall behind by double-digits. It would stay that way until Junior Isaiah Pruett (Asheville, NC) made two free throws and then on the next possession Walters was able to tip in an offensive rebound, cutting the lead down to seven points. The Maryville advantage would stay seven points as the half ended, Greensboro trailed, 41-34.
Both teams traded baskets to start the second half and then a Pruett bucket trimmed the advantage to only five points, 39-34, but the Scots were able to, once again, push their lead back to double digits. Eventually, Maryville grew their advantage to 14 points, 55-41, until Junior Tim Boulware (Greensboro, NC) stopped the run with two free throws. Wright pulled the Pride to within 10 points after a driving layup, but the Scots continued to have an answer on their offensive side of the ball and with 9:52 remaining in the game, Greensboro trailed by a score of 65-50. Unfortunately, the Pride were unable to cut into the lead or make a comeback and as the buzzer sounded, they would fall to Maryville, 101-73.
Junior Matthew Brown (Orlando, FL) led Greensboro with 18 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Walters who finished with 13 points. In addition, Wright added 11 points to go along with his 7 assists and 6 rebounds. The Pride will be back in action this Saturday, December 10th when they travel across town to face Guilford College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
