Greensboro, NC – The Greensboro College Women's Basketball team welcomed an old foe to Hanes Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. It had been a while since the Pride had faced #5 nationally ranked Christopher Newport, but today's game renewed a long standing rivalry between the two teams. On top of that, Greensboro welcomed back a number of the program's alumni for Alumni Day and the atmosphere was just like it was when the Pride and Captains went toe to toe each season.
The first quarter was fast paced, with both teams trading baskets. After a CNU basket, Senior
Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) gave Greensboro the early one point lead and they would keep the lead until the Captains recaptured it at the 6:51 mark. After falling behind by three points, Junior
Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC) drained a jumper to get to within 18-17, but CNU would hold they lead and as the quarter ended they held a 24-20 advantage.
The Captains took control of the beginning of the second quarter, increasing their lead to eight points, 36-28. With 4:00 minutes remaining in the half, the Pride began a run and after a Moore layup and a Senior
Karli Mason (Monroe, NC) free throw, the game was suddenly tied, 39-39. Unfortunately, the Captains withstood the run and took a 50-42 halftime lead into the locker room.
The third quarter did not start the way Greensboro wanted as CNU took control of the game, eventually grabbing their largest lead, 63-42. Whiteside cut it to 18 points with a three-pointer from the wing and then she trimmed it to 16 points with a pull up jumper, off of a fast break. Whiteside would score again, along with Sophomore,
Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) to end the quarter tailing 75-60.
The Pride played with a lot of energy in the fourth quarter but the Captains kept the pressure up, not allowing Greensboro to cut into the lead. Once again, the advantage would reach 20 points, but another basket from Moore trimmed it to 18 and that is how the game would end, with the Pride falling by a final score of 91-73.
Whiteside finished the game with a team high 18 points, to go along with her five rebounds. Sophomore
Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) added 15 points, while Moore had 14 points and Senior
Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) finished with 13 points. Legette also grabbed a team high eight rebounds and had 5 steals. Greensboro is back in action this Tuesday night when they travel to Misenheimer, NC to face Pfeiffer University in a USA South match-up. Tip-off is schedule for 7:00pm.
