Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Greensboro cruises to 78-64 win over The University of the South to go 2-0 this weekend.

Demorest, GA – After a strong performance last night, the Greensboro College Women's Basketball team was looking to do it again this afternoon against The University of the South, to finish their two game trip to Georgia.  The Pride hoped to continue their production on the offensive side of the ball and they did just that, along with an excellent defensive effort, coming away 2-0 on the weekend, defeating the Lions 78-64.

The University of teh South took an early 3-0 lead, to start the first quarter, and that score would last for the next four minutes of play.  Greensboro was unable to find the basket and the Tigers eventually increased their lead to seven points, until Sophomore Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) drained a three pointer for the Pride's first points of the game.  However, after a timeout, Greensboro stepped up the defensive pressure and after baskets from Senior Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) and Jennings, they would take their first lead of the game, 9-7.  Jennings scored her ninth point of the game after she stole ball and converted a fast break layup and on the next possession she was fouled, hitting one of two free throws.  As the quarter was nearing an end, Senior Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) took a pass and hit a three-pointer to give the Pride their largest lead of the game, 15-9, and as the horn sounded Livingston would convert an offensive rebound into a basket for the eight point advantage.

As the second quarter began, Legette converted two free throws which was followed by three straight Whiteside three-pointers to increase Greensboro's lead to 25-9, forcing aUniveristy of the South timeout.  The lead eventually increased to 20 points, after a Sophomore Lauren Livingston (Greenwood, SC) basket and two made free throws.  Two possessions later, Senior Karli Mason (Monroe, NC) picked up where she left off last night, draining a big three-pointer from the wing.  The Pride continued to control the game and as the half came to an end, they headed to the locker room with the lead, 42-22.

Whiteside, Jennings and Sophomore Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) combined for seven points to begin the third quarter, but midway through the quarter the Tigers were able to trim the lead to 15 points, 49-34.  Livingston got Greensboro back in the scoring column, hitting an 18-foot jumper and after the defense forced a turnover, Jennings drove the basket and was fouled, allowing her to convert two free throws for the 55-37 advantage.  She would do it again, as the quarter was coming to a close, hitting another three-pointer, along with two more free throws and a layup at the buzzer, putting the Pride ahead 66-46.

The fourth quarter saw both teams come out and create turnovers on the defensive side of the ball.  Legette got the scoring going with a bucket to give Greensboro another 20-point advantage.  A few possessions later, Legette stole the ball and found Sophomore Azuria Barrino (Charlotte, NC) under the basket for the layup.   Most of the quarter was back and forth but the Pride would ultimately come away with the win, 78-64.

Greensboro had for players in double figures, with Jennings leading the way with 23 points, Livingston with 15 points, Whiteside with 11 points and Legette with 10 points.  Jennings and Legette also combined for eight steals, (four apiece) while also leading their team with six rebounds each.  The Pride will be back in action on Wednesday, November 30th when they travel to Fayetteville, NC to face Methodist University in their USA South opener.  Stay tuned to www.greensborocollegesports.com for all game updates and recaps.
