Demorest, GA – It had been almost two weeks since the Greensboro College Women's Basketball team had been in competitive action and Coach Macy and her team were ready to get on the road to Georgia for two straight games this weekend. First up, was Piedmont University on Friday evening and both teams come out strong on both sides of the ball. However, it would be the Pride who controlled the end of the game, earning their first win of the young season, 84-78
The start of the first quarter saw both teams come out running with Senior
Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) hitting a jumper to give Greensboro the early advantage, 4-2. The lead would change hands on a few possessions until Sophomore
Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) drove in for a layup to reclaim a one-point advantage for the Pride, which was followed by a jumper from Junior
Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC) giving her team their largest lead, 15-12. However, the Lions proceeded to go on an 8-0 run, ending the first 10 minutes with the lead, 20-15.
Piedmont pushed their lead to eight points to begin the second quarter, but Greensboro began a run of their own and after two straight Senior
Karli Mason (Monroe, NC) three-pointers, the Pride tied the game, forcing the Lions to call a timeout. After relinquishing the lead, Mason would do it again draining her third and fourth three-pointers in a row, twice tying the game. Whiteside eventually reclaimed the advantage for Greensboro, after two free throws, and that allowed the Pride to head into the locker room at halftime up 40-38.
Moore opened up the third quarter with a short turnaround jumper in the paint, but Piedmont answered with a three-pointer from the baseline to pull to within one-point, 42-41. The Lions then recaptured the lead after two straight baskets and keep it for a few minutes until Senior
Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) took a pass from Sophomore
Lauren Livingston (Greenwood, SC) putting Greensboro back ahead 48-47. Legette followed that up with a three-pointer to match the Pride's largest lead of the game, 51-48. Palmore continued the scoring with a layup and then Greensboro continued to find the basket, increasing their lead to double digits, and would eventually close out the quarter on top, 59-51.
The beginning of the fourth quarter saw Moore convert a three-point play and then a few possessions later, Sophomore
Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) drained a three-pointer to, once again, increase their lead to double digits, 66-55. As they had done all game, the Lions were able to chip away at the lead, but the Pride's defense held strong, which allowed the offense to go to on a run expanding the lead to 74-62, with 3:17 remaining in the game. However, Piedmont would hit two straight three-pointers to pull to within 80-76, with only 27 seconds left, but four Livingston free throws was all the insurance Greensboro would need as they earned their first win of the season by a final score of 84-78.
