Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pride drops season opener to Guilford College

Greensboro, NC – It was opening night for the Greensboro College Women's Basketball team in Hanes Gymnasium, as the welcomed neighboring school, Guilford College.  There were high expectations for the Pride this season, but Coach Macy and her team knew that the only focus they had on their minds were the Quakers as both teams battled back and forth.  However, in the end it was Guilford who would come away the win, 89-79.

The Pride came out of the gate with three straight baskets by Junior Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC) and Senior Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) to take an early 6-0 lead.   Greensboro would eventually increase their lead to double digits when Senior Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) drained a 3-pointer for the 13-3 advantage.  Both teams traded baskets and as the quarter came to an end Guilford had cut the lead to five points, 22-17.

In the second quarter, the Quakers would eventually take the lead and at the 4:34 mark, had increased it to six points, 34-28.  However, a layup by Sophomore Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) pulled the Pride to within one point, but that is as close as they would get for the last two minutes of the quarter and as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime, Greensboro trailed Guilford, 44-37.

The Quakers kept up the pressure on the defensive side of the ball and were able to jump out to a 12 point lead midway through the third quarter.  However, the Pride began to make a run behind Senior Egypt Alexander (Salisbury, NC), who came have the bench and hit some clutch free throws.  With 1:39 remaining in the quarter, Palmore put Greensboro up for the first time in the second half, after slashing through the paint for a layup.  Two free throws from Sophomore Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) maintained that lead and as the quarter came to a close, the Pride held the advantage, 66-63.

The beginning of the fourth quarter was back and forth until Senior Karli Mason (Monroe, NC) converted her second three of the game to keep the lead at six points.  However, Guilford was able to force turnovers which resulted in points to start a 7-0 run.  Their lead would eventually go to 9 points and they would not relinquish it again.  As the final buzzer sounded, Greensboro would fall to the Quakers by a final score of 89-79.

Mason and Whiteside each finished with 14 points to lead Greensboro on the night.  In addition, Palmore grabbed 14 total rebounds, while Moore pulled down 10 rebounds.  On the defensive side, Legette finished the game with a team high five steals.  The Pride will have 12 days to prepare for their next game, as the will travel to Demorest, GA for back-to-back games, with Piedmont University on November 25th and Sewanee on November 26th.  Stay tuned to www.greensborocollegesports.com for updates and recaps on those games.
