Men's Soccer Begins Conference Play With Tie

Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Mens' Soccer team began conference play on Wednesday afternoon as they traveled to Southern Virginia University. The Pride would be coming into the contest with some solid play, while not suffering a loss the last four times out. As for the Knights, they would come in winless on the season, but they had played a very tough schedule and held their own of late.

The first half saw early action as the Pride found the back of the net at the 3:21 mark to take an early lead. Jovan Cotton sent a beautifully placed cross to the Pride's red-hot Craig Thomas, who pounded the ball past the Knight's goalkeeper. The Cotton to Thomas connection would be the quickest goal of the season to start a game for the Pride. Pride Goalie Lee Carrico would preserve the slim lead with several nice saves throughout the half. The Pride would double up the Knights in shot attempts by a 10 to 5 margin in the half. And even with the offensive chances, the Thomas goal would stand up as the Pride would head to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage.

The second half would begin with more physicality and a sense of urgency from both teams. The half produced less shots as the strategies from both teams were evident. This game had all the makings of a 1-0 final score until the 80:54 mark of the second half. A corner kick by the Knights was headed toward the goal and that is where Kenyon Grange found the back of the net with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. Both teams worked hard the last few minutes but there would no further goals as both teams would have to settle for a 1-1 draw as the final whistle blew to end the game.

Greensboro College Men's Soccer Coach Manbi Nyepon had these thoughts about the tough finish: "Another outstanding performance by our back line. We created so many chances again. I felt we were the better team on the day but we just could not score enough goals. We are very disappointed by the result, but we will move onto the next game with confidence."

The Greensboro College Men's Soccer (2-5-5) team will play next at William Peace University on Saturday, October 8th, at 3:00PM.
