Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Women's team has suddenly risen from the ashes and have started to build momentum and a nice run, while winning three of their last four contests. The latest and probably their most impressive overall performance came on Thursday afternoon, as they blanked Pfeiffer University 4-0.
The victory was also the first conference game and conference win of the season. Again, the Pride would have to manage with one if its bright spots, as
Jamayia Brown would be unavailable due to injury. Head Coach
Mike Johnston would have to make the right maneuvers as losing Brown was taking a major piece out the Pride strategic puzzle. However, mission accomplished by the Pride coaching staff as they came out the aggressors.
That style play would pay off as
Hannah McCarthy would find the back of the net for a quick 1-0 Pride advantage at the 25:03. It appeared even though being in control and outshooting the Falcons by an 8 to 2 margin, the Pride would have to settle for only a one goal advantage after the first 45 minutes. However, the Pride struck very quickly and a great pass from
Skylar Mathis would find
Cassidy Olszewski at the goal mouth, and she would knock it home at the 44:54 mark with only a few seconds left in the half. Now Coach Johnston and his group could move into halftime with a much wider smile.
The second half would see the Pride keeping up intense pressure and working in the Falcons end of the field for most the half while outshooting the Falcons 10 to 3. Hard working Senior
Haley Russell would get her first of the year at the 66:54 mark and Olszewski would spell "double trouble" for the visiting Falcons as she notched her second of the night at the 77:56 mark while being assisted by
Skyler Molnar. At that point, the game was no longer in doubt and the Pride would cruise to the 4-0 victory. Freshman goaltender
Sofia Pagnamenta, being serenaded by the crowd at times, would pitch the shutout for the Pride in a mostly calm evening in net.
Greensboro College Head Coach
Mike Johnston had these post-game comments: "I was thrilled for our group to get off to such a good start in conference play. We set the tone early and we competed for 90 minutes. We scored some quality goals and Cassidy's right before halftime was huge for us. So proud of the effort. Pfeiffer is a quality team and well coached so any victory against them is a special one."
