Greensboro, N.C - The Greensboro College Volleyball team traveled to Brevard College on Tuesday evening for a USA South Conference match-up. The Pride (16-10, 10-3 USAS) walked away with yet another conference win in a 3-1 match (26-24, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23).
USA South Rookie of the Week, Payton Shiflet, had a big night for the Pride, putting away 15 kills and adding 14 digs. Jade Vrobel also had a solid performance on the front line tallying 11 kills in contribution to the Pride win. Jaylyn Templeton collected a match-high 41 assists, while Lauren Mantel totaled 21 digs.
The first set saw a battle of back-and-forth as both sides saw their way through three lead changes and six ties. GC started strong taking the lead to 9-4 but Brevard would battle back to push the lead to 19-15. The Tornados would extend the lead to a 22-18 before the Pride would rally back and force a tie at 24-24. A slight miscue from the Pride would give Brevard set one 26-24.
Set 2 would begin with an exchange of early points from the Pride and Tornados. Greensboro would eventually gain back the momentum in the second set with a 6 straight point finish with kills from Vrobel, Shiflet, Kelci Brooks and Abey Hancock securing the set win 25-20.
Set 3 was all Pride from the beginning, leading by as many as nine points before denying a late Tornado rally to take the 25-20 victory. The Pride hit the gas in the fourth set by going on a 7-1 scoring run to take a 23-19 lead eventually sealing the deal with a 25-23 set win to secure the match, 3-1.
The Greensboro College Volleyball team will next head to Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. for a tri-match featuring the Avenging Angels of Meredith College and the Monarchs of Methodist University. Match times are slated for 12:00PM and 2:00PM.
