Women's Soccer Rides Big First Half to Road Win

Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Women's Soccer Team continues their journey toward the top of the USA South Athletic Conference standings as the season continues to unfold. Head Coach Mike Johnston's Pride, only losing once in their last five outings, have matured from a young team learning their way into a team that has learned how to win and the results are proof.

On Saturday afternoon, the Pride traveled to Rocky Mount to play North Carolina Wesleyan, a team that was also in the mix to make a move in the conference standings. But when the dust settled, the Pride would climb back on the bus headed home with an impressive 3-1 victory.

The first half would equal some of the most offensive success the Pride has enjoyed all season. Even though their shots were limited, they made each and every one count. The fun started early, as Hannah McCarthy continued her success of late offensively at 2:34 mark of the first stanza with a goal. In addition, the Pride wanted more and both Haley Russell and Taylor Harrison would oblige by finding the back of the net within a few minutes of each other around mid-period to extend the lead to 3-0. The Harrison goal was assisted by Cassidy Olszewski, another Pride player who has stepped up on the offensive end of the pitch. Sofia Pagnamenta, the reigning USA South Defender of the week, continued her solid play stopping all three first period shots and 9 out of 10 for the game.

The second half would see the Bishops outshooting the Pride 10 to 3, but the defense and goaltending stood tall as only one of those shots would score late in the game.

The 3-1 final would ensure the Pride team would continue to build confidence as the 2022 season winds to close. Four conference games remain on the regular season schedule.

GC Head Coach Mike Johnston had these comments after the road victory: " I am proud the way we responded after our last game today. We scored 3 quality first half goals and finished some key chances. The second half we were able to hang on and defend as Wesleyan came at us. I thought Sofia in goal was really sold for us today. Overall, very proud of our effort and a much needed road win."

The Greensboro College Women's Soccer Team (5-6-2 Overall, 3-1-1 Conference) will play Southern Virginia University at Pride Field on Wednesday, October 19th, with play beginning at 5:00PM.
