Men's Soccer Rides Big Second Half Surge for Win

Greensboro, N.C. - Greensboro College Head Men's Soccer Coach has not been pleased with the results of his squad in the month of October. In fact, after his team's performance only days ago, he knew Wednesday's game at Pride Field against Mary Baldwin University would be a pivotal game to get the Pride back on track, and in position to finish the 2022 campaign on a strong note.

The first half, being played in a light rain, would find both teams trying to create scoring chances but the defenses would take center stage. Quality shots on goal were few and far between as the half would end scoreless.

The second half would find the Fighting Squirrels standing on the field prepared to play and the Pride were no where in sight. One could only speculate Coach Nyepon needed a little extra time to get his points across to his team. Once the Pride appeared they would enjoy one of their most explosive halves in 2022. However, that goal surge would not occur until after the Fighting Squirrels broke the deadlock at the 56:44 mark and took a 1-0 lead.

At this point, Coach Nyepon and his staff would find out exactly the direction of this team. Would they wilt or show resilience with a dose of pride? It would not take long for those questions to be answered as Liam Mowers would direct a corner kick perfectly into the top left corner of the net at the 59:15 mark to deadlock the contest at 1.

From that point forward the Pride would regain their confidence and swagger and play some of their most explosive soccer of the season in all phases of the game. And at the 73:58 mark the tie would be broken. Craig Thomas, one of the most offensive threats in the USA South Athletic Conference, would again ring the bell with a header as he leapt high in traffic to maneuver the ball past the goalkeeper to put the Pride in front to stay. It was Thomas' fourth goal in the past five games.

But the fireworks for the Pride were not over, as less than four minutes later the speedy Jordan Shutt would blast a shot from almost 30 yards out that would again beat the defense and with only ten minutes remaining, the Pride would go ahead 3-1. And for all intent and purposes, Shutt's goal would shut the trap door on the Flying Squirrels chances of a comeback.

The final minute would tick down and as the scoreboard showed triple zeros the Pride would find themselves back in the win column with a two-goal victory.

GC Head Coach Nyepon had these thoughts on the home win: "It is never good a goal down but for some reason it lit a fire under us. After their goal the team came alive, and we started to insert ourselves into the game. It was a great team win. I am proud of our boys for digging in and getting 3 points at home. "

The Greensboro College Men's Soccer Team (3-6-5 Overall- 1-1-1 Conference) will be back in action on Sunday, October 16th, as they battle Pfeiffer University at 5:00PM at Pride Field.
