Box Score Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Men's Soccer Team would continue battling for conference positioning as they faced a struggling Pfeiffer University Falcons squad on Sunday afternoon at Pride Field. With the conference standings becoming somewhat clearer, yesterday's Pride victory placed them comfortably in the 5th spot as the top 6 teams will advance to the conference tournament. However, the Pride have three conference games remaining against teams who are directly above them in the standings, and a nice 12-day stretch producing some big wins could catapult the Pride as high as second in the regular season standings.
The first half of Sunday's contest would start with a Pride roar as shifty
Arturo Campos would find the "Goal Machine" Craig Thomas in open spaces and the sophomore from Charlotte, N.C. would burn a kick that the Falcon Goalie could not handle. And poof, the Pride would go up 1-0 after only 33 seconds of play to stun the visitors. Both teams had offense on their mind the rest of the half but excellent play on the back line by Spesock, Sargeant, and Haddock, and timely goalkeeping
Cristian Del Cid Portillo would preserve the smallest of advantages as the first half would draw to a close.
Half two would consist of heightened physicality and offensive aggression as the Falcon's would look for the equalizer. An injury to the Del Cid Portillo with a little over six minutes to play would require a cold
Lee Carrico to come in the game with designs of preserving the shutout. And that is exactly what Carrico did as the Pride would take the Thomas' goal almost 90 minutes ago, and ice the victory as the Pride would secure a very important win to preserve their future plans as USA South Athletic Conference Tournament participants.
Greensboro College Men's Soccer Coach
Manbi Nyepon had these thoughts on the home victory: "This was an all- around great team performance tonight. Getting that early goal really helped us settle into the game and play the way we wanted to play. We are very proud of the guys for digging in to gain another 3 points at home."
The GC Men's Soccer Team will visit North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, October 22nd, with a 4:00PM start time.
