Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Women's Soccer Team had developed a reputation as a team that does not allow many goals. During their last six matches, nary an opponent had scored more than one goal and Head Coach Mike Johnston's squad had pitched a shutout on three occasions. Unfortunately, their miserly defense would not enjoy the same stinginess on Tuesday afternoon as they were handled by Mary Baldwin University by a count of 5-1. Â
The first half started well for the visitors as a pair of young ladies, who continue to impress, found the first score of the afternoon as Cassidy Olszewski would find Hannah McCarthy for the goal at the 15:34 mark to put the Pride on top. The one goal lead would not last long as at the 25:56 mark the Fighting Squirrels would even the match with a goal and the half would end with a 1-1 draw.
The second half would begin with both teams looking for the advantage and in less than ten minutes the flood waters would break, and the Pride would find themselves stunned. The home team would land a barrage of goals and within an eight-minute span the Fighting Squirrels would bury the Pride with three goals and a commanding 4 to 1 lead with 27 minutes left in the contest. The Fighting Squirrels would tack on another goal late to extend the lead to 5 to 1 and that is where this match would come to an end.
Greensboro College Women's Soccer Head Coach Mike Johnston had these thoughts on the uncharacteristic final: "We started the game as the aggressor and had several quality chances early. After having a goal called back, we stayed hungry and found the back of the net. After our goal I felt like we became complacent. Mary Baldwin was quite good to start the second half and we simply did match the intensity. We had several chances and simply could not finish in the same fashion that they did tonight. All the credit to MBU in this one."
The GC Women's Soccer Team (4-6-2 Overall- 2-1-1- Conference) will play at North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, October 15th, at 2:00PM in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Â
