The Greensboro College football team opened the season against crosstown rival Guilford College in the Gate City Soup Bowl. Despite scoring on its opening drive, the Pride fell to the Quakers, 21-7.
Greensboro (0-1) began the game with the ball on its own 24-yard line. After a six-yard completion between
David Loughry II and Zach Aktinson, Shy'Heem Clemons broke off a 60-yard run off the left side of the line. The Pride had first and goal at the Guilford 10.
After a false start, Loughry threw an endzone fade to the back right pylon to Aktinson for the first score of the new season.
Zach Allman converted on the point after to give Greensboro a 7-0 lead at the 13:22 mark in the first.
Both teams exchanged four-and-outs as Guilford (1-0) looked to even the game as it started its second drive of the night with9:50 to go in the first.
The Quakers used short runs and a pass of 15 yards and found themselves at the Greensboro 22. However, the defense bent but did not break as it forced three-straight incompletions for a turnover on downs.
A similar fate presented itself for the Pride as they turned the ball over on downs. With 9:05 to go in the half, Guilford was once again threatening to tie the game.
The hosts found themselves in the Greensboro territory after a personal foul and did not waste the opportunity. The Quakers' Teddy Gassert found Tre Alexander for a 40-yard touchdown with a successful point after, the game was even at seven.
Both squads had one more chance but were unsuccessful as they headed into the locker room.
The second half began as either side exchanged possessions when Guilford took control of the ball at the 7:14 mark of the third.
After a couple of rushes from Paulie Menegay, Gassert threw a 10-yard score to Edrick Purnell to give the Quakers a 14-7 lead.
The Pride struggled to get the ball into Guilford territory for the remainder of the third quarter.Â
In the fourth, the Quakers went on a 10-play, 80-yard drive that took up 5:11 of the clock to expand their lead to 14 (21-7).
Greensboro began its next drive with 7:02 in regulation adn Loughry began to take over. The senior quarterback completed two passes for 25 yards and rushed for another 22 yards to put the Pride on the Guilford 17,Â
Unfortunately, the drive staled there as Loughry threw an interception on fourth-and-seven.
Greensboro was able to force a punt from Guilford but a fumble on the return gave the ball back to the hosts as they were able to run out the clock and claim the 14-point victory.
Loughry went 18-40 from the pocket for 145 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Clemons totaled 62 yards on seven carries.
Dejuan Robinson led the defense with seven tackles, two of them for a loss of 16 yards.
The Pride will go on the bye this coming week ad they look forward to playing on Pride Field on Saturday, September 18 against Averett University. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
