The Greensboro College men's basketball team faced USA South Athletic West Division foe, Brevard College in a non-conference matchup. The Pride were victorious over the Tornados, 78-62.
In the first half, Greensboro (2-4) and
Matthew Brown opened the game in fashion with a dunk.
Greyson Collins followed it with a layup for a 4-0 lead.
Brevard (0-4) responded with five-straight points to take a 5-4 edge at the 17:08 mark. Both teams went back-and-forth until the Pride rattled off eight-straight with six coming from Brown. GC led 17-11 with 9:54 to go in the first.
The Tornados tried to cut the deficit but were only able to get within three. Over the final five minutes of the half, Greensboro made six of its eight free throw attempts mixed in with a couple layups to lead by 10 (35-25).
Out of halftime, Brown scored the first five points to extend the lead to 15. Brevard slowly cut the difference to 11 (47-36) but a three from
Kevon Meertins opened it back to 14.
For most of the second half, the Pride led by double digits and only saw the difference dip below 10 (59-50) before a 12-0 to lead 71-50 with 4:36 to go in regulation.
The Tornados tried to close the gap but the difference was too great as Greensboro won by 16 points.
Meertins led all scorers with 24 points and went a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line. Brown finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Collins almost had a double-double as he scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds. As a team, the Pride out rebounded and out shot Brevard 47-35 and 42.2-33.3 percent, respectively.
Greensboro travels to William Peace University on Tuesday, November 23 for the first conference game of the season. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
