Greensboro takes on Maryville

The Greensboro College football team traveled to Maryville, Tennessee to take on the Scots in the final game of the 2021 season. The Pride fell to the Scots, 49-14.

Greensboro (0-10, 0-8) took the opening kickoff but eventually punted the ball to Maryville (4-6, 4-4). On the Scots first play, Austin Longworth intercepted the pass and returned it to the Maryville 1.

The Pride were knocking on the door but the Maryville defense stood tall and held GC out of the endzone of four-straight plays. Maryville took over and just needed one play as Cody Estep rushed for the 99-yard score to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.

GC took over with 10:05 on the clock but were unsuccessful on its drive and kicked the ball back to the Scots. After a one-yard rush, Dejuan Robinson forced and recovered a fumble for the second turnover caused by the Pride.

Starting in Maryville territory, Greensboro began its drive and picked up a first down to the Scots 37. A miscue on first down caused the Pride to lose five yards and were unable to move the ball and turned the ball over on downs.

Maryville started at its own 42 with 5:27 to go in the first. The hosts used nine plays to go 58 yards as Nelson Smith connected with Hunter Burke for the 25-yard score to lead 14-0.

Greensboro had the ball to finish the first quarter and on the first play in the second, David Loughry II was intercepted by Grant Henderson. The Scots wasted little time as they used two plays to find the endzone and extend the lead to 21.

Both teams exchanged turnovers and punts as Maryville took over with 7:38 to go in the first half. Maryville put together a 10-play drive as it found the endzone on a 11-yard rush to lead by four scores (28-0).

GC went three-and-out on its next drive but on the punt, Jacob Cortez fumbled the ball as Cale Matthews recovered the ball for the Pride. On the ensuing play, Jaylin Bolden rushed over the left edge and went 33 yards for the score. Zach Allman's point after was good and cut the deficit to 21 (28-7).

On the next two possessions, both teams threw interceptions as Maryville took over on its own 48 with 22 seconds left on the clock. After a gain of three and 15 yards, the Scots called a timeout with five seconds remaining.

With the ball on the GC 34, Nelson Smith dropped back and threw up the deep ball as Trystin Wright came up with the grab for the score as the clock read zeros. The Scots led 35-7 at the half.

In the third quarter, it was all Maryville as it scored on both of its drives to hold a 42-point advantage. Greensboro scored its second touchdown of the game at the 10:48 mark of the fourth when Loughry found Matthews for the 17-yard score. The Scots held on for the 35-point victory.

Bolden finished the day with 75 yards on the ground and the score. Matthews caught four passes for 34 yards and a touchdown.
