The Greensboro College men's soccer team faced North Carolina Wesleyan in a USA South East Division battle. A late goal from
Merced Mendez Flores proved critical as the Pride won 2-1.
Greensboro (6-6, 2-0) took an early lead in 14th minute after
William Curry crossed a ball into the box. A N.C. Wesleyan (3-6-2, 1-1-0) defender tried to clear the ball but a wrong bounce led to an own goal.
The Pride held the advantage till the halftime horn sounded.Â
In the second half, play between both sides was pretty even with the Battling Bishops trying to pick up the offensive pressure.
However in the 81st minute, GC began to control the ball in the offensive zone.
Alexander Bishop crossed the ball into the box as it found its way to Flores who scored to double the lead.
N.C. Wesleyan continued to battle as they cut the deficit to one with a goal in the 86th minute. Fortunately, the defense stood tall and the clock ran out as the Pride held on for the 2-1 win.
Cristian Del Cid Portillo made three saves in 90 minutes of action. The Bishops held the advantage in shots on goal (5-4) and corner kicks (4-2).
Greensboro travels Methodist on Saturday, October 9 to face the Monarchs. Start time is 7:30 p.m.
