Football faces LaGrange

The Greensboro College football team made the trek to LaGrange College to face the Panthers in a USA South Athletic Conference battle. The Pride fell to the Panthers, 29-14.

LaGrange (2-6, 2-4) received the opening kickoff and began at its own 13-yard line. The Pride defense stood tall, allowing only a gain of five yards and forced a turnover on downs.

Greensboro (0-8, 0-6) took over at the Panther 18 at the 14:01 mark of the first. A false start before the first snap set the Pride back. GC then had two consecutive plays that lost yards as it eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Both teams exchanged possessions as LaGrange took over at its own 32. The Panthers used five players to drive 60 yards. On fourth-and-eight, LaGrange attempted a 25-yard field goal but it was blocked by Taiseng Brown and returned by Da'Shaun Wallace for a touchdown. 

However, the play was called back due to a penalty against Greensboro. On fourth-and-goal, the Pride held the Panthers out of the endzone for a turnover on downs.

GC had to punt the ball away on its ensuing possession. LaGrange started in Greensboro territory and used four plays to go 45 yards as Shedrick Lindsey connected with De'queze Fryer for the six-yard touchdown pass. The point after was good as the hosts led 7-0.

After the kickoff, the Pride began its next drive at the GC 26. David Loughry II connected with Ryan Buchanan for a 33-yard gain to put GC in the opponent's half of the field. The drive stalled as the Pride turned the ball over on downs.

The Panthers took over on its own 31-yard line and went 57 yards in 16 plays as Alex Rivera made a 29-yard field goal to increase the lead to 10 (10-0).

Greensboro took over after the kickoff at the 10. Loughry connected with Coy Davis and Cale Matthews on four passes for 41 yards. After a seven-yard rush by Shawn Cardwell. Loughry found Zach Atkinson for the 42-yard score. Zach Allman's point after was good to pull the Pride within three (10-7).

LaGrange wasted little time as it went 75 yards in 1:10 to increase its lead back to 10 (17-7) after Lindsey completed a 12-yard pass to Daniel Colby for the score.

With 1:27 to go in the half, the Pride began their next drive near midfield. GC drove the ball to the Panthers 21 but a sack on third down caused the clock to run out in the first half.

Greensboro began the second half with the ball. On second down, Pratt Spivey was intercepted as it was returned to the GC 40.

LaGrange's first play went 30 yards to set up a first-and-goal. With it's back against the goal line, the Greensboro defense stopped the Panthers and forced a turnover on downs.

On the ensuing play, the Pride fumbled the ball back to LaGrange as the hosts took over at the GC 5-yard line. After three plays, the Panthers' Rivera made a 27-yard field goal to make the score 20-7.

Greensboro punted the ball back to LaGrange. LaGrange used four minutes to cover 80 yards as Lindsey found Fryer for the two-yard touchdown pass. The point after was no good as the hosts led by 19 (26-7).

McKinley VanDyke took over for the Pride at quarterback on their next drive. Greensboro moved the ball to its own 47 but was forced to punt it back to the Panthers.

The hosts drove the ball to the GC 26 after plays of 21, 10 and 10 yards. On first-and-10, Michael Byrd-Scott forced and recovered a fumble to give Greensboro the ball back at its own 27.

Jaylin Bolden had three runs that covered 26 yards to put the Pride at the LaGrange 22. After an offsides penalty, VanDyke found Teagan Griggs for a 17-yard touchdown. Allman's point after was good as the Pride trailed, 26-14.

LaGrange took over at its own 35. The Panthers went 51 yards in seven plays as Rivera made a 31-yard field goal to hold a 15-point lead.

Greensboro began its next drive at the 35 but struggled to move the ball. The Pride ultimately had to punt the ball back to the Panthers.

The Panthers used its last drive to run out the clock to secure the 29-14 victory.

LaGrange outgained the Pride 460-231 and had 26 first downs compared to 14.

Greensboro hosts Methodist University on Saturday, November 6 on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
