The Greensboro College men's soccer team faced Averett University in the regular season finale. The Pride and the Cougars tied 1-1 after double overtime.
Before the game, Greensboro honored its 2021 seniors. As the match began, both teams went back and forth.
The Pride (8-7-2, 4-1-2) scored the first goal of the game as
Connor Spesock headed in a free kick from
Jordy Briceno in the 37th minute. GC held on to the 1-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, Briceno tried to double the lead off a penalty kick but the Averett (8-6-2, 4-1-2) goalkeeper, Tyler Yates, made a diving save to his right to stay within one.Â
In the 63rd minute, Lluc Pou placed a ball in the box off a free kick. Johnny Kummander was able to redirect the ball into the net to tie the game.
Both teams were then in a stalemate as the time in regulation ran out.
In the first overtime, the Cougars had four shots but only one found its way on goal as
Cristian Del Cid Portillo made the save. As the game headed to the second overtime period, both teams battled in the middle third of the field. Neither side were able to have a shot on goal as the final horn sounded.
Averett held the advantage in shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (7-6).
The tie places the Pride at the 3-seed in the East Division and waits to see who the 2-seed in the West Division will be. Greensboro will travel to the West 2-seed on Saturday, October 30 for the first round of 2021 USA South Men's Soccer Tournament.
