Game Recap: Football |

Early Deficit Hurts Greensboro at Southern Va.

The Greensboro College football team fell behind by 17 points midway through the third quarter and were not able to overcome it. The Pride ultimately lost to the Southern Virginia Knights, 31-14.

Greensboro (0-6, 0-4) started the game with the opening possession. On the first play, the Pride were sacked and fumbled the ball as Southern Virginia (2-5, 1-4) recovered on the GC 29.

The Knights used four plays to cover the 29 yards to take a 7-0 lead. The Pride's next drive saw them pick up two first downs before punting the ball back to SVU.

Southern Virginia moved the ball 15 yards on five plays before Da'Shaun Wallace forced a fumble as GC recovered on the Knights 33.

A five-yard run by Demond Miller and a completion from David Loughry II to Cale Matthews put the ball on the SVU 11. Three-straight incompletions saw Zach Allman trot onto the field to attempt a 28-yard field goal. Unfortunately, the kick missed to the left to keep the score at 7-0.

Both teams exchanged possessions as the first quarter came to an end. Southern Virginia had the ball to start the second and drove to the GC 25. The Pride's defense stood tall and forced the kicking unit onto the field. The Knight's Derek Bass made a 42-yard field to extend the lead to 10.

Neither side were able to get a drive going as the ball stayed on the Greensboro side. SVU attempted a 40-yard field as time expired but missed to the left. The hosts held a 10-point advantage at the half.

Southern Virginia opened the second half with a 11-play drive that covered 71 yards in 6:35 capped off by a 11-yard touchdown run to increase its lead, 17-0.

Greensboro and Loughry looked to the next drive to get on the board. The senior quarterback completed six passes for 76 yards to put the Pride at the Knight 3. On a trick play, Matthews completed a pass to Loughry for the score with 3:27 on the clock. Allman's point after was good to cut the deficit to 10 (17-7).

Both offenses began to find a rhythm as SVU drove 66 yards in 4:43 to regain a 17-point edge early in the fourth quarter (13:37).

The Pride and the Knights exchanged drives until 4:58 to go in regulation. The first play on GC's drive, Loughry's first down pass was intercepted at the 12 yardline and returned for a score. After a successful point after, SVU led 31-7.

Greensboro began to drive the ball into Southern Virginia territory but a personal foul stalled the drive. Allman pinned the Knights at their own six on its next drive.

After a short run, the Southern Virginia running back fumbled the ball at the 14 yardline. Wallace came in from the secondary, scooped up the loose ball and returned it to the house with 56 seconds left in regulation.

SVU ran the clock out on the ensuing drive to win by the 17-point margin (31-14).

Loughry went 18-43 from the pocket for 189 yards and an interception. Max Steele led the defense with 17 total tackles (4 solo, 13 assisted) with 2.5 tackles for loss. Wallace had seven tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

The Knights had 324 total yards compared to 212 for the Pride.

Greensboro returns to Pride Field on Saturday, October 23 against Huntingdon College. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
