The Greensboro College women's soccer welcomed Meredith College to Pride Field in a USA South matchup. Even though the game went through two overtimes, the Pride tied with the Avenging Angels, 1-1.
The match began with both sides possessing the ball in the middle third of the field. In the 20th minute, Meredith (4-2-1, 2-0-1) notched the first goal on the board. The Angels had a corner that fell into the box and after a few bounces they were able to score.
From there the contest became evenly played with Meredith remaining ahead by one at the half.
In the second half, Greensboro (3-5-2, 1-1-1) controlled the pace of play and was awarded a corner.
Natalie Habich took the corner and delivered a low, line-drive ball that
Logan Schnabl redirected with her left heel into the back of the net. The game was even once more (1-1) in the 50th minute.
The Pride kept the pressure on for a majority of the second half but was unsuccessful to break the tie as the game headed to the first overtime.
In the first extra 10 minutes, the Angels took the first two shots as
Lindsay Fox stopped one and the other sailed over the crossbar. GC took two shots of its own but both were off target.
The game entered its final 10 minutes of action unless either side found the back of the net. The Pride had two quality chances including one from
Madi Bettencourt but a diving save from the Angels' goalkeeper kept the game tied as the final horn sounded.
Greensboro outshot Meredith, 7-4, and took eight corner kicks compared to three for the visitors.
Lindsay Fox made three saves for the Pride while Meredith's Miranda Lutz stopped six shots.
GC returns to Pride Field on Sunday, October 3 as the University of Mary Washington comes to town. Start time is 12:00 p.m. and make sure to wear blue as it is a "Blue Out" for Colorectal Cancer Awareness.
