RALEIGH, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team held off a late surge by the Angels of Meredith College Saturday to record a 78-73 USA South Athletic Conference victory.
In the first period, Greensboro held a 9-4 lead before
Danyel Armstrong converted on a rare four-point play to extend the Pride lead to nine. Over the remainder of the period, the Pride would lead by as many as 10 before going into the second period with a 18-16 lead.
Over the course of the next 10 minutes, the Pride was able to keep the Angels from converting a field goal over the final 5:40 of the half to take a 38-32 lead into the break behind eight second period points by
Ashley Free.
Following halftime, Free helped Greensboro take their largest lead of the contest at 64-49 with just under a minute left in the third period. However, the Angels did not go away as they pulled to within three points late, but Greensboro was able to hold them off for the five-point victory.
Free finished with a career-high 31 point to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Lewis also finished in double figures with 13 points.
The Pride women will return to action Sunday when they host the Pacers of William Peace University. For more information on Greensboro College women's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
