GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team saw their five-game win streak end Saturday with a 63-58 loss against Mary Baldwin University.
Greensboro gained a 4-0 lead to open the game after baskets by
A'Liyah Woods and
Sabria Joseph before the Squirrels scored six straight points to take a 6-4 lead.
The two teams then traded the lead back and forth over the remainder of the period.
With Mary Baldwin holding a 12-11 lead early in the second, Greensboro used a 9-2 run to take a 20-14 lead with 5:00 to play in the half. Woods recorded six points during the run while
Ashley Free and
Nichelle Jeffries combined for three points.
Over the final five minutes, Greensboro was able to extend their lead out to nine, following a three-pointer by
Katie Lewis before taking a 26-20 lead into halftime.
The Pride was able to maintain their lead for most of the third period before Mary Baldwin went on a 12-3 run over the final 3:46 to tie the game at 45.
In the final 10 minutes, Greensboro struggled to gain any momentum, as the Squirrels were able to take the five-point victory.
"Today was a sad day as we recognized our senior class prior to the game," Head Coach
Randy Tuggle said. "It was real unfortunate that we could not come away with the win today but we are now preparing for the conference tournament starting next week."
Woods finished with a team-high 15 point while Best and Lewis combined for 25 points.
The Pride will enter the USA South Athletic Conference as the No.2-East seed and will host a second-round game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
