VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Sophomore
Michael Meley scored two goals as the Greensboro College men's lacrosse team fell to the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan Saturday 22-7.
The Marlins took a one-goal lead just seven seconds into the game before Meley found the equalizer just seconds later.
Greensboro was then able to take a 2-1 lead after
Spencer Kontoulas found the back of the net before Virginia Wesleyan scored the game's next three goal to gain a 4-2 advantage.
However, the Pride was able to pull back to within one on an unassisted goal by
Michael Halladay before the Marlins took a 7-3 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, Virginia Wesleyan was able to strike for four goals while
Michael Sehlhorst tallied a man-up goal to make the score 12-4 at halftime.
Over the final 30 minutes, Greensboro got goals from
Michael Kiley, Meley, and
Austin Bane but the Marlins pulled away for the victory.
"I thought we played tough in the beginning of the game," Head Coach
Mike Foderaro said. "At the end of the day it came down to lack of discipline on both sides of the ball.
"We continue to have penalties that kill us and we refuse to win first time ground balls. Virginia Wesleyan did not let anything stand in their way of winning today. We will look to regroup and prepare for Guilford on Wednesday."
Kyle Ishler took the loss in goal for the Pride despite recording 17 saves on the day while
Patrick Bell won seven face-offs.
The Pride men will return to action Wednesday evening when they travel to take on their crosstown rivals from Guilford College.
