GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team split a doubleheader against the Panthers of Ferrum College Friday to open the 2019 season.
 
Greensboro fell in the first game by a 3-2 score before taking the nightcap 5-1.
 
"It was a great start to the 2019 season," Head Coach Teresa Fister said. "We competed the whole time and saw some really good things.
 
"Ferrum is a really solid team and we feel that we can only continue to get better."
 
Game One
Ferrum College scored one run in the first inning before Greensboro was able to tie the game with a run of their own in the bottom half.
 
After Daisy Martin reached on a fielder's choice, Jordan Deaton laced a double down the right field line to score Martin.
 
The score then remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Cassie Collins roped a line-drive single past the third base bag to score Allyson Loy from third base.
 
Ferrum was able to tie the game in the sixth inning before Bailey Oakes hit a homerun over the right-center field wall to give the Panthers the one-run victory.
 
Greensboro finished with five hits in the game as Caroline Stanley tallied two hits in three plate appearances.
 
Despite pitching a complete game and recording four strikeouts, Cheyanne Cox took the loss in the pitching circle.
 
Game Two
Greensboro quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Cassie Collins double to right-center field that scored Daisy Martin and Jasmine Worthy.
 
The Pride held their two-run advantage until the fourth inning when they plated two more runs.
 
Worthy scored on a Ferrum throwing error after Caroline Stanley placed a beautiful bunt on the third-base line. Later in the inning with two outs, Stanley came across to score the second run of the inning on a Martin single to left field.
 
Greensboro was able to add one run in the fifth inning on a Hunter McMillion groundout before Ferrum pulled back to within four with one run of their own in the sixth inning.
 
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Pride threatened to add on to their lead but was unable to push a run across.
 
However, Maddy Wetherholt was able to shut down a Panthers threat in the seventh to secure the four-run victory.
 
Worthy went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Martin and Stanley both had two hits. Wetherholt (1-0) recorded three strikeouts in the win.
