GREENSBORO, N.C. – Michael Phifer scored a career-high 36 points as the Greensboro College men's basketball team held on down the stretch to top the Panthers of LaGrange College Tuesday 99-95.
Greensboro held a 14-11 lead just six minutes into the first half before the Panthers were able to mount a 21-7 run over the next 4:20 to establish a 32-21 lead with 9:58 to play in the half. However, the Pride was able to battle back to within 34-29, following an 8-2 run over the next 2:35.
LaGrange then went on to lead by as many as eight over the final four minutes of the half before Phifer tallied a three-point play to pull Greensboro to within 51-45 heading into halftime.
Following the break, Greensboro began to click on all cylinders offensively and used an 11-6 run to pull within one with 16:31 to play. Phifer and
Keyford Langley combined for seven points during the run while
Eric Peaks Jr. and
Greyson Collins each had two points.
After pulling to within one, LaGrange tallied a layup to pull back out to a three-point lead but the Pride mounted another big run following the basket. Trailing 59-56, Greensboro used a 12-4 run, behind a pair of three-pointers by Langley, to take a 68-63 lead before establishing their largest lead of the half at 82-76 later in the period following a five-point run by
Greyson Collins.
Over the final 6:30 of the game, LaGrange was able to pull back even with the Pride before Greensboro closed out the game on a 10-6 run to secure the conference victory.
In addition to his 36 points, Phifer also recorded 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double double.
Justin Minnis finished the game with 20 points while Collins had 16 points. Langley also had 16 points to go along with seven assists.
