GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team defeated the Cougars of Averett University Saturday to open USA South Athletic Conference play 71-53.
After trailing 14-4 to open the game, Greensboro was able to battle back to within five points heading into the second period before taking their first lead of the contest at 24-23, following a jumper by
Ashley Free.
Following the Free basket, Greensboro then went on a 9-4 run over the final 2:26 of the half to take a 33-27 lead into halftime.
Sabria Joseph led the Greensboro run with seven points, while
Taniya Ford added two points.
The Pride was able to extend their lead to seven heading into the fourth period before outscoring the Cougars 25-14 over the final 10 minutes to secure the 18-point victory.
Destiny Timberlake led all scorers in the final period with seven points, while Free, Joseph, and
Brooke Kinley combined for 13 points.
Free finished the game with a game-high 17 points, while Joseph and
Diajah Hickson both finished with double figures scoring.
