GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College football team dropped their USA South Athletic Conference opener to the Cougars of Averett University Saturday 48-0.
Averett held a 7-0 lead heading into the second quarter before extending their lead to 13-0 with 14:57 to play in the half.
Following the Cougars touchdown,
Kasseem Bagley fielded the kickoff in his own end zone and returned it for 64 yard to give the Pride the ball on the Cougars 36-yard line. However, Greensboro was unable to capitalize on the opportunity and was forced to punt the ball away.
After the punt, Averett went on to take a 34-0 lead into halftime before scoring the game's final 14 points in the third quarter.
"I was very disappointed with our team today," Head Coach
Greg Crum said. "Averett is a good football team, but we did not give our best today. We had several third-and-long situations on defense and we had them stopped but we missed the opportunity to get off of the field.
"I don't want to take away from Averett and how their kids played today. We will go back to work tomorrow to prepare for N.C. Wesleyan and we may be forced to make some tough decisions in regards to the depth chart. No matter what, we will continue to coach these young men to foster the growth and development of this program."
Jeremiah Speed finished with a team-leading 11 tackles while Bagley posted eight tackles.
Jason Gerber finished with six tackles, including one sack for a loss of 15 yards.
The Pride will return to action Saturday when they travel to take on the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College. For more information on Greensboro College football, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
