RALEIGH, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team held off the Pacers of William Peace University down the stretch Saturday to tally a 76-71 victory.
The Pride women held a 15-7 lead after the first period before extending their lead out to 38-22 heading into the half.
During the strong second period, Greensboro connected on 48 percent of their field goals, while going 2-of-5 from three-point range.
Following the intermission, Greensboro went on to take their largest lead of the game at 49-29 with back-to-back three-pointers by
Nichelle Jeffries and
Lauren Whitley.
Greensboro was then able to take a 62-48 lead into the fourth period before the Pacers began to battle back.
Over the first five minutes of the period, William Peace outscored the Pride by a 10-5 mark to pull within 67-58 with just over five minutes remaining.
As the clock began to run down, the Pacers were able to pull within three points before
Makayla Williams drained a pair of free throws with .7 on the clock to secure the victory.
"I thought it was a good effort today," Head Coach
Randy Tuggle said. "We played hard for three quarters but made too many mistakes in the fourth that allowed William Peace to get back into the game.
"We had some great play by our point guards and we also had some other players that continued to produce like they have all season."
A'Liyah Woods posted a team-high 14 points while
Katie Lewis had 12 points.
Brianna Best finished with a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pride women will return to action Sunday when they travel to Methodist University. For more information on Greensboro College women's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
