LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Greensboro College men's soccer team claimed their first USA-South victory Saturday after defeating the Scots of Covenant College, 2-1.
Over the first 45 minutes, both teams fought for possession, but neither team was able to capitalize as the score remained tied at zero.
In the 53
rd minute of the contest,
Jordy Briceno forced his way into Covenant territory. As he approached the 18-yard box, the Scots applied pressure around Briceno, but left
Darli Mihindou wide open. Briceno then made a pass to Mihindou, who booted the ball right past Covenant's keeper to lift the Pride up, 1-0.
Less than three minutes later, the Scots answered back with a goal of their own.
The score remained tied at one, until the 81
st minute.
Briceno hustled back into Covenant's territory and broke through their defense for an unassisted goal.
The Scots were unable to get the goal back and the Pride walked off the field with the one-goal victory
Briceno recorded one goal and one assist, while
Elmer Martinez earned the win in the goal for the Pride with five saves.
"It was a good win for the boys today," Head Coach
Tony Falvino said. "We showed a lot of fight and grit against a very physical team.
"I am proud of how the boys responded and looked to play a good brand of soccer. We need to recover and prepare for our next game."
