GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's lacrosse team dropped their USA South Athletic Conference match-up with the Monarchs of Methodist University Wednesday, 10-7.
Methodist took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter before
Victor Mehrtens found the equalizer just 1:30 into the quarter.
The Monarchs were then able to strike for two goals over the next five minutes to retake the lead at 3-1, but
Spencer Kontoulas pulled Greensboro to within one at the break.
Over the first seven minutes of the third quarter, Greensboro found a spark within their offense as
Michael Halladay,
Joseph Stump and
Patrick Bell each found the back of the net, giving Greensboro a 5-4 lead.
However, Methodist came storming back with five straight goals over the next 10 minutes of play to establish a 9-5 lead with 11:00 remaining in the game.
Greensboro did not back down from the Monarchs and tried to fight back.
Bell was able to score right off the face-off for a second time on the day to pull Greensboro to within 9-6 before
Ryan Cole took an assist from
Kyle Dahlin and beat the Monarchs keeper to pull within two.
However, Methodist would strike for one final goal before running out the clock to secure the three-goal victory.
"For some reason we played like we expected Methodist to roll over for us today," Head Coach
Mike Foderaro said. "We came out flat and Methodist played great, hats off to them."
In addition to his team-leading two goals, Bell went 12-for-19 in the face-off circle and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls.
Stephen Tanner took the loss in goal despite recording 15 saves.
The Pride men will return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when they host Brevard College. For more information on Greensboro College men's lacrosse, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
