Pride Fall To Monarchs In Overtime

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to the Monarchs of Methodist University Monday, 100-99.

The Monarchs were able to establish a nine-point lead just six minutes into the game before Greensboro came back to within 22-20, following a 7-0 run, with 12:53 to play in the half. Cornelius Johnson scored the first four points of the run, including a monstrous dunk, before Joseph Gatling capped it off with an old-fashion three-point play.

The two teams then traded baskets back and forth for the next few minutes, but Methodist was able to take a 58-49 lead into the break.

However, the Pride started the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 59-58 lead. Keyford Langley drained a pair of long three-pointers to start the run before adding a layup from the right side of the paint.

Following the Greensboro run, Methodist was once again able to establish a nine-point advantage, but Greensboro battled back to tie the game at 74 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.

After the game-tying dunk by Corey Burnette, Greensboro opened up their largest lead of the game at 82-78 with a pair of Carmoni Marks free throws.

Over the final six minutes, Greensboro was able to hold on to their lead until Jackson Whitley tied the game at 91 with eight seconds remaining, sending the game into overtime.

Greensboro then raced out to a 95-91 lead in the early part of the extra segment. Johnson and Gatling had two points each during the spurt.

Despite holding on to a one-point lead with six seconds remaining, the Monarchs were bailed out with a late foul call that allowed Whitley to hit two free throws to secure the one-point victory.

"It was a tough way to end the game, but I am proud of our guys," Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. "After struggling on the defensive side of the ball in the first half, I thought our guys did a really job in the second half.

"We are playing good basketball right now and just hope it's not too late. If we can take care of business over our two games, and qualify for the conference tournament, I really like our chances."

Gatling finished with a team-high 27-point and eight rebounds, while Darus Maddox and Johnson both had 21 points.

The Pride men will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when they travel to Ferrum College. For more information on Greensboro College men's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
