HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team squared off with NCAA Division I member High Point University in an exhibition contest Thursday.
High Point opened the first period with an 8-0 run before
Nichelle Jeffries got Greensboro on the board with a long three-pointer from the top of the key.
Greensboro was then able to battle back to within 9-8 following another three-pointer. This time
Ashley Free hit from long range.
Following the Free three-pointer, High Point went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes before Greensboro closed out the final 1:20 of the period on a 9-5 run to pull within after 23-17.
A pair of three-pointers from
Katie Lewis sparked the run, while Free hit from long range for a second time.
Despite pulling to within six at the end of the period, High Point began to pull away in the second period and did not look back.
However, Greensboro continued to battle hard for the remainder of the contest but could not overcome a slow second period.
"We started out real strong and confident in the first period, and that alone shows how much untapped potential this group has," Assistant Coach
Vontreece Hayes said. "We have minor glitches that need and will be corrected before our first conference game. But other than that this game was a learning experience."
Free finished with a team-leading 18 points to go along with two rebounds and assists.
Brianna Best fell just short of a double double as she tallied 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jeffries finished with nine points.
The Pride women will return to action Saturday when they travel to Salem College as they begin their quest to defend their USA South East Division Regular Season Championship. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
